Most people will be glad of seeing the back of these shops. They served their purpose when the houses/high rise were on the estate. Most have long gone. It is alright keep building houses but what about the doctors dentists schools etc which will be needed

Blot on the landscape springs to mind ,and i am glad that they are to be replaced with new affordable homes ,BUT one serious question and that's
"Who will the homes be awarded to " ??????
(Please do not use them for immigrants /illegals )

Peterp, there are two primary schools in the immediate vicinity, a dentist at the bottom of the main road that runs through the estate and Chandler House medical centre on Poolstock Lane.

Angelwood and I bet now all of the existing facilities' are over subscribed. When was the last doctors/dentist's (NHS)opened around Wigan. From Standish in the north to Ashton in the south there are hundreds if not thousands of houses springing up but no other facilities to complement them. Even the road structure cannot cope with the extra vehicles. Wigan infirmary is swamped now and the covid/flu has not hit yet.Worsley mains area will have 169 homes built and once the shops are demolished 59 2to 4 bedroom houses will be built there. that will be a lot of people from 118-236 if it is one person per bedroom

On about property and infrastructure, 40yrs ago Worsley Mesnes was at it's peak in property numbers, there was the high density council estate and some private house building had been done in the vicinity of the council estate, and I am not talking about the Worsley Mesnes boundary which adjoins Hawkley Hall, I am talking about the area in between Warrington Road and Poolstock Lane, boundaried by Poolstock Brook and the railway line and Smithy Brook, and I say 40yrs, that being back to 1983, because they stated to demolish the Worsley Mesnes council estate in 1984, before the concrete was even dry from the construction of it in the 1960s and 70s

The council estate had literally thousands of dwellings on Worsley Mesnes, houses, bedsits, flats, maisonettes, high rise flats, sheltered accommodation, shops and a pub, club and a GP surgery, the only thing it lacked was a jail, and apart from the houses, just about everything else has gone, and the flats which remain are going to be demolished at some time in the future, and the council told me at an open day public consultation event, that over time they would like the houses to be replaced with super efficient houses, of the same type which have been built in Durham Street in Whelley.

But as regards the old Pemberton Collieries site, which is only across Warrington Road from Worsley Mesnes, that now has hundreds of new houses on it, so that is going to be a strain on the local infrastructure, as regards, GP, dentists, schools etc, they only thing is that around here, the road situation is lot better with the opening of the new road, but in somewhere like Ince, where they are going to build hundreds of new houses, on a already congested road system, I dread to think what is going to happen to Ince in the coming years infrastructure wise.

Worsley Mesnes Shopping Precinct, shortly after closure in May 2023, the last two shops to close were the Pharmacy and Spar Store.

The plans for the development of Worsley Mesnes, from a 1960s concrete built dung heap, to a 21st century folly.

In the distance, replacement shops are under construction in May 2023, they opened about a month later.

The octagonal shapes, which make up the footprint of the old Crooked Wheel Pub, can be seen here.

It is already happening, they are building on four of the five sites designated for redevelopment in Phase 1 of the regeneration of Worsley Mesnes, and there are five Phases planned.

They won't break ground on building in the last of the sites, until the old shops have been demolished, which is supposed to start in late this year, because the site of the shops is part of the final site, that site being the where the old flats were in Housley Close, Dryden Close and the Shopping Precinct.

In the 60's the Spar was a Fine Fare. There was a post office/wool shop next door. Then I remember a chemist, betting shop, newsagents and a chippy.
